The Intergalactic Medium and Soft X-ray Background

چکیده
I present an overview of some of the recent advances in our understanding of the distribution and evolution of the ordinary, baryonic matter in the universe. Two observations that strongly suggest that most of the baryons seen at high redshift (z ≥ 2) have turned into some forms yet undetected at z = 0 are highlighted. With the aid of large-scale cosmological hydrodynamic simulations, it is shown that most of the baryons today are in a gaseous form with a temperature of 10 − 10 Kelvin – the “warm/hot gas”, shock heated during the gravitational collapse and formation of the large-scale structure at low redshift. Primarily line emissions from this warm/hot gas may account for a large fraction of the residual (after removal of identifiable discrete sources) soft Xray background at hν < 1.0keV. How this warm/hot gas may be detected by the next generation of EUV and soft X-ray instruments is indicated. Detection or non-detection of this warm/hot gas will have profound implications for cosmology.

Measuring Feedback Using the Intergalactic Medium State and Evolution Inferred from the Soft X-ray Background
We explore the intergalactic medium (IGM) as a potential source of the unresolved soft X-ray background (XRB) and the feasibility to extract the IGM state and evolution from XRB observations. We build two analytical models, the continuum field model and the halo model, to calculate the IGM XRB mean flux, angular auto correlation and cross correlation with galaxies. Our results suggest that the ...
متن کاملUpper Limit on Dimming of Cosmological Sources by Intergalactic Grey Dust from the Soft X-ray Background
Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) produce a dominant fraction (∼ 80%) of the Soft X-ray background (SXB) at photon energies 0.5 < E < 2 keV. If dust pervaded throughout the intergalactic medium, its scattering opacity would have produced diffuse X-ray halos around AGN. Taking account of known galaxies and galaxy clusters, only a fraction Fhalo <∼10% of the SXB can be in the form of diffuse X-ray hal...
متن کاملNumerical simulations of the Warm-Hot Intergalactic Medium
In this paper we review the current predictions of numerical simulations for the origin and observability of the warm hot intergalactic medium (WHIM), the diffuse gas that contains up to 50 per cent of the baryons at z ∼ 0. During structure formation, gravitational accretion shocks emerging from collapsing regions gradually heat the intergalactic medium (IGM) to temperatures in the range T ∼ 10...
متن کاملThe X-Ray Forest: A New Prediction of Hierarchical Structure Formation Models
We use numerical simulations of structure formation in a Cold Dark Matter model to predict the absorption lines in the soft X-rays produced by heavy elements in the shock-heated intergalactic medium at low redshift. The simulation incorporates a model for heavy element production in galaxies and the subsequent dispersion of the metals to the intergalactic medium. We analyze in particular absorp...
متن کاملX-ray Constraints on the Warm-hot Intergalactic Medium
Three observational constraints can be placed on a warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) using ROSAT PSPC pointed and survey data, the emission strength, the energy spectrum, and the fluctuation spectrum. The upper limit to the emission strength of the WHIM is 7.5 ± 1.0 keV s cm sr keV in the 3 4 keV band, an unknown portion of which value may be due to our own Galactic halo. The spectral shape ...
متن کاملA Limit from the X-ray Background on the Contribution of Quasars to Reionization
A population of black holes (BHs) at high redshifts (z ∼> 6) that contributes significantly to the ionization of the intergalactic medium (IGM) would be accompanied by the copious production of hard ( ∼> 10 keV) X-ray photons. The resulting hard X–ray background would redshift and be observed as a present–day soft X–ray background (SXB). Under the hypothesis that BHs are the main producers of r...
